Este Saturday, August 15, at 8:30 PM, Estepona will officially inaugurate the Plaza Aurelio Gurrea Chalé, a new public space located between Cristóbal Colón and María de Maeztu streets. This plaza honors over fifty years of social, cultural, educational, and professional commitment to the city.
Positioned directly in front of the APRONA Foundation, the site holds special significance, reflecting the legacy of Aurelio Gurrea Chalé, who has been a staunch advocate for individuals with disabilities in Estepona. The inauguration ceremony will pay tribute to his dedicated service to the community.
Gurrea became president of APRONA in 1982 and has since worked alongside this organization and others in the sector to secure funding for maintaining facilities and improving support for individuals with intellectual disabilities. More than four decades later, he continues to lead APRONA, which has become one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in Andalusia.
The choice of location for the plaza further emphasizes the tribute, linking it to one of Gurrea’s primary areas of social work throughout his career in Estepona. The new plaza covers an area of 1,841 square meters and has undergone a complete transformation to enhance its modernity and accessibility.
This redevelopment has also improved the overall aesthetics and public infrastructure of the area, aiming to create a more inviting environment for residents, families, and APRONA users. Notably, the redesign has prioritized the needs of those served by the Foundation, ensuring a comfortable, safe, and inclusive space for people with functional diversity while enhancing the connection between APRONA’s facilities and the surrounding urban environment.
This initiative is part of Estepona’s broader effort to modernize public spaces, incorporating accessibility and functionality to facilitate enjoyment for all citizens. The official inauguration will take place today, marking a new civic meeting point and publicly acknowledging the enduring contributions of Aurelio Gurrea Chalé to social development and community welfare.
With the opening of Plaza Aurelio Gurrea Chalé, Estepona establishes a permanent tribute to a life devoted to serving the city and advocating for a more inclusive society.
