This evening at 8:30 PM, Estepona City Hall will inaugurate a new public area named ‘Plaza Aurelio Gurrea Chalé’ to honor his significant contributions to social, cultural, educational, and professional life in the municipality over the past fifty years.

The City Council aims to create a lasting tribute to an individual whose life has centered around serving others, advocating for social causes, promoting culture, and demonstrating unwavering commitment to Estepona.

The chosen site, located in front of APRONA facilities, holds special significance as Aurelio has long been associated with this foundation that supports individuals with functional diversity. He was appointed president of this social organization in 1982 and worked alongside other entities to secure funding that enhanced both the centers’ operation and the care provided to those with intellectual disabilities. Over forty years later, he remains at the helm of APRONA, which is recognized for having some of the most advanced facilities in Andalusia.

‘Plaza Aurelio Gurrea Chalé’ is situated near the intersection of Cristóbal Colón and María de Maeztu streets, covering an area of 1,841 square meters.

This project has transformed the public space, making it more modern, accessible, and functional while enhancing its aesthetics and infrastructure. The renovation included a complete overhaul of the pavement and street furniture, as well as the replacement of sewage and supply networks and improvements to the stormwater drainage system with new connections and inlets.

Additionally, the redesign introduced new functional and decorative features, including green areas, a fountain, and a drinking fountain, creating a more pleasant environment for the public.

Special attention was given to the needs of APRONA users, ensuring the space is more accessible, comfortable, and inclusive for individuals with functional diversity.
