Estepona Town Hall Launches Brush Clearing Campaign to Prevent Flooding

The Estepona Town Hall has announced that its ongoing clearing campaign is making progress in various urban waterways, including river and stream passages, with the aim of reducing the risks of flooding and fire hazards.

The efforts involve removing obstacles from river and stream channels that could hinder proper drainage. This intervention is crucial for preventing blockages that may lead to flooding during heavy rainfall and to mitigate the risk of forest fires, thereby protecting both residents and the municipality’s natural heritage.

The clearing activities are slated to continue until the first quarter of the following year and will take place in areas including Arroyo Judío, the elevated pathways along Camino la Alberdina near BP, and downstream of the A-7 near Playa del Padrón. Other targeted locations include Arroyo el Taraje, Hornacino de Levante and Poniente, Arroyo Pantoja, Arroyo Dos Hermanas, Arroyo Las Abejeras, among others. The Town Hall will also address additional areas as cleaning needs arise throughout the campaign.

Residents are reminded that the Town Hall’s authority extends only to waterways within urban areas, while the maintenance of waterways in rural areas falls under the jurisdiction of the Junta de Andalucía. The Town Hall urges locals in affected zones to pay attention to signage while work is in progress.

This clearing and pruning initiative resumed after the summer season, as the Junta de Andalucía recommends refraining from work along rivers and streams from spring through summer (March to July-August) to protect the nesting periods of protected species. All ongoing activities are being conducted with the necessary approvals from the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
