This Saturday, October 3, Estepona will host the Costa del Sol Gran Fondo, an event expecting over 600 cyclists to participate in a challenging 127-kilometer ride through the stunning Sierra Bermeja.

The Gran Fondo, a term that signifies a long-distance cycling event, encourages riders to set their own pace rather than compete for a top spot. Cyclists from both Spain and abroad are set to join the ride, which the local council reports was a great success last year.

The event will commence and conclude at Estepona’s fairground and leisure complex. Participants will venture inland, traversing through picturesque towns such as Casares, Gaucin, Cortes de la Frontera, and Jimera de Libar, before navigating the challenging terrain of the Sierra Bermeja mountain range. The total elevation gain for the ride is approximately 3,300 meters.

A particularly tough segment awaits riders around the 115-kilometer mark, where they will tackle the steep ascent of Peñas Blancas, rising from near sea level to 1,268 meters. This climb was recently featured in the professional cycling circuit during La Vuelta a España, earning it the nickname “Angliru of the South” for its difficulty. After the climb, cyclists will be rewarded with a descent back to the coast.

The influx of participants is expected to benefit local businesses, with increased foot traffic in cafes, bars, and hotels. Spectators who wish to witness the event can head to the fairground to support the cyclists.
